Warm up or stretch it?:

The difference between warm up and stretching exercises.

We have always heard people ask, "what should I do first, stretch or warm up?" Well the answer to this age old question is quite simple. If exercising is the first thing on your agenda, it would be wise NOT to stretch first. The reason being is that you do not want to stretch cold muscles. Doing so could cause injury.

You might ask: What's the difference? Isn't it all the same? The difference is this: You are increasing the flow of blood to your muscles thru activity that does not put immediate stress on your muscles, but instead loosens the muscles (example: jumping jacks). On the other hand, if you stretch PRIOR to or INSTEAD OF warming up, you put undo stress on the muscles when it is not loosen, which could result in sprains, strains or worse injuries during your main exercise regiment. Think of your muscles as ice. Warming-up allows you to "melt" your muscles slowly. But if you stretch first, you risk "cracking" that ice.

Now you're ready, go on to this.....

Now that you are warmed up, it would be time to do some stretching. Here are some suggestions:

- Stretch out your quads

- Do calf stretches

- Do squats

- Do shoulder stretches

- Do head rolls

There are other stretching techniques out there, we suggest you do some research at your local library or on the web. Also, with all other exercises, make sure you are in good physical condition before attempting any high/low intensity workouts. If you suffer from injuries, we suggest you consult your medical professionals. Again, remember safety first and have a great ride.**
