Portion Your Platter:

Healthy tips for eating in moderation.

Information from the American Dietetic Association

Welcome friends to the "Portion Your Platter" section of Get-Into-Cycling.com. We're all guilty of cheating.....cheating on our diets that is. How many times have we promised ourselves, especially after the holiday seasons, that we're going to start exercising and eating right, only to break that promise two weeks later?

Well we at Get-Into-Cycling.com are here to help you break that cycle and get you on the road to better eating habits as well as exercise. As you and I both know, exercise is meaningless if it isn't followed with healthy eating habits. So here is some useful information that we hope you'll find helpful in your quest for better health. This information was written by the American Dietetic Association.

SERVING SIZES MADE SIMPLE

You don’t have to stop eating your favorite foods to eat healthy. In fact you can still enjoy ice cream or an occasional burger, as long as you control your portions AND are physically active on a regular basis. Remember the key to eating healthy is moderation.

SO HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?

Well, serving sizes are designed to help you figure out how much to eat at meals so you won’t go overboard on your favorites. Check out the suggestions below to see if you’re eating the right serving sizes because double and triple sizes of even a “good food” can add inches.

HOW MUCH IS THAT?

- 3 ounces of meat is about the size of a deck of cards.

- One serving of meat, fish, or poultry is about the size of a computer mouse.

- One-half cup of rice or pasta is a scoop of ice cream.

- One slice of bread is the size of a CD case.

- One-half cup of cut fruit or vegetables, pasta, or rice is about the size of a small fist.

- One cup of milk, yogurt, or chopped fresh greens is about the size of a tennis ball.

- One ounce of snack foods (e.g., pretzels) = a large handful

- Three ounces of grilled fish = a checkbook

- 3 ounces of skinless chicken breast is the size of a cassette tape.

- A medium-sized potato is the size of a computer mouse

- One ounce of cheese is about the size of one dime.
