Kids Gear:

A simple guide for purchasing bicycling equipment for your kids.
Welcome friends to the "Kids Gear" section of Get-Into-Cycling.com. In this section we will touch on the various types of bike equipment you should consider for your kids.
Bicycling is a fun and healthy activity for kids. But like all activities, it has its risks. But it's good to know that there are ways to keep our children safe. There is a variety of safety clothing and protective gear available for kids. Depending on style and quality, there is something out there to fit most budgets. Here are some suggestions to help you find the right kids gear for your budding cyclist:
- Helmets. This should be the most important item on your list to purchase for your kids. In some states and jurisdictions, it's even a law that your kids must wear helmets when riding a bicycle. When purchasing a helmet, try to purchase those that have plenty of vent holes and comfortable padding. Look for helmets that have "ANSI" or "SNELL" ratings. BE ADVISED: ALL HELMETS regardless of price or manufacturer are generally only good for one crash. Most manufacturers, if not all, recommend that you replace your helmet should it be involved in a crash. If your child should crash, check the helmet for cracks. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR. Have your local bike shop, or if possible, the manufacturer, check the helmet if you're in doubt.
- Gloves (example: full finger and half finger). If your child should take a spill or fall off their bike, a good pair of gloves will protect their hands. You can find kid specific gloves at most major department stores as well as bike shops.
- Elbow pads and knee pads, great for the beginner or those just learning to balance. You can use pads for skating/skateboarding as an alternative.

- Purchase sturdy shoes (athletic type), preferrably with velco strap. If you use shoes that have laces, tuck the laces into the sides of your shoes so that they won't get caught in the chain.
- Light and comfortable, preferrably reflective pants, shorts and tops. Cycling specific clothing is the best, but a good pair of denim jeans or shorts and t-shirt will be just fine.
- Add reflectors and lights on the wheels, seats and handlebars.

- Bells or horns are also important. Kids usually enjoy these items as well.

- Comfortable seats. Remember, kids are a bundle of energy, but they fatigue faster as well.
Bring your kids with you when you shop for their gear since they'll be the ones using it anyways. Just remember to watch your pocketbook, since kids gear can get pretty pricey just like adult gear. Explain the importance of certain equipment (like helmets), expecially since most kids (especially older ones) may think that these items are unnecessary or "not cool." Remember, safety first. And don't forget to cheer them on and give lots of encouragement.
