The Glossary: F-J

Welcome friends to section F-J of The Glossary.

--F--

Fixed gear or Fixie: A single geared bicycle with a gear that does not freewheel. Also known as a track bike.

Fork: The front assembly that holds the front wheel. Also great for eating spaghetti.

Freehub: That part of the hub that allows the rear wheel to spin while the pedals are not in motions.

Freeride: A type of mountain bike. Also the name of a 70's rock song.

Freewheel: The combination of cogs that is attached to the rear hub.

Freewheeling: A term used when riding on your bike without pedaling.

--G--

Gear: The chainring and cog combination connected or linked by the chain which produces movement.

Gear Ratio: The difference between the front and rear gear sizes. The higher the gear ratio (the small cog on the rear, large chainring in front), the faster the bike (but harder to pedal). The lower the gear ratio (the large cog on the rear, smallest chainring in front), the slower the bike (but with greater ease to pedaling).

Granny gear: An ultra small or third chainring on the crank or the large rear freewheel cog. Thus, allowing the cyclist to climb with the lowest amount of effort.

--H--

Hammer: To ride at your maximum effort.

Headset: Connects the front fork to the frame and allows the front wheel to steer. There are two types: threadless and threaded.

Head tube: It is attached to the top tube and down tube. The fork steerer goes through this tube.

Helmet: A device used to protect the head of a cyclist.

Hub: The center of each wheel, where the spokes are attached.

Hybrid: A type of bicycle that combines the attributes or a road bike with a mountain bike.

--I--

Individual time trial: A road race where an individual races against a clock. The individual with the fastest time in the race wins.

Interval training: A type of training that involves short bursts of hard riding with short segments of easy riding for recovery.

--J--

Jump: To accelerate hard and fast.
