Cleaning Up:

Keep your ride squeaky clean.

Welcome friends to the "Cleaning Up" section of Get-Into-Cycling.com. Now you've got your new or pre-owned (yard sale) bicycle and have ridden it around the neighborhood a couple times. Well, maybe it might be time to give it a good, quick wash down. As a matter of fact, regularly maintaining your bicycle helps to enhance its efficiency and helps to prolong its life. Here are some helpful suggestions:

- Use soap and water to remove mud, dirt and grime. Use baby wipes or a similar product for light jobs.

- Use degreaser if necessary.

- Use a stiff brush for the chains, gears, cranks, tires and wheels.

- Use a soft cloth or sponge for the frame & fork.

- Hose down to rinse. But remember to dry it after, because certain parts may rust. Don't forget to regrease/relube vital parts (i.e. chain, gears, etc.)

- Also, inspect the bicycles for damages to the frame, fork, cables, gears, tire and wheels. (see other Tech Tips pages for more on bike repairs.)

Remember by taking care of your bicycle on a regular basis will prevent untimely and costly breakdowns. When your bike looks good, you look good.
