Books and More:

Other cycling goodies for you.

Hello friends and welcome to the Books and More section of Get-Into-Cycling.com. We've shown you movies, we've shown you music. But there is so much more out there to show that is cycling related. What else you say? Glad you asked. There are books, posters, t-shirts, mugs, do I need to go on?

So here we showcase our collection of books and stuff that we've run into during our travels that has a definite cycling theme to it. Like the music and videos, some are very inspirational, some informative and the others, well, cheesy. Enjoy.

Book: The Ten Speed Commandments by Mike Keefe

Here's a brilliant book that takes cycling to the next level. For cyclist with a sense of humor, this is the book that you need to have. Take everything that you've known about cycling and add a cup of laughter and you have The Ten Speed Commandments: A funny and clever look at cycling and the people who ride bikes.

From bicycle history to bike handling. From components to saddles, The Ten Speed Commandments takes each aspect of cycling and gives it a funny twist. This is a rare book from 1987, so if you can find it, buy it. You will not be disappointed. _________________________________________________________________

Comic Book: Cat 3

Here's a real rarity: A comic book about cycling. I actually ran into this gem while cleaning out my office. Cat 3. For those of you who don't know, Cat 3 is short for Category 3: A cycling category for amateur racers in the USCF. Anywho, I originally picked up this comic book when I was a young college student working part-time in a local comic shop back in the early 90's. Thought it was very cool to see cycling depicted this way.

Don't know if this comic book is still around, but if you're lucky enough to have a copy or copies of this comic book, hold on to them. Cool art work and stories.

Book: The Tour De France Companion by Bob Roll & Dan Koeppel

This great book, published in 2004, gives a history of the Tour De France and talks about every aspect of the tour: From the riders, to their equipment. It describes the race course, the terrain, the people of France. It even talks about the everyday struggles that each racer faces during a Tour. Everything from going to the bathroom to eating. Definitely a must have for any avid fan of professional bike racing.

Poster: Motivational

This is a classic motivational poster from the late 70's/early 80's....before motivational posters were the norm in office buildings throughout the country. I have this poster in my home office and it still impresses me to this day with its encouraging words: "The thrill is not just in winning, but in the courage to join the race."

Truer words could not be spoken. Not just a motivation to keep riding, but to keep living. Definitely no cheese here.

Information Pamphlet: 1973 California Bicycle Laws

Here's a blast from the past.....an informational pamphlet regarding the State of California's bicycle laws from 1973. Now the laws themselves are not cheesy (although there are some that might disagree), but the illustrations might be: Banana seat bicycle with chopper bars, boy with "Bobby Brady" haircut and clothes, the station wagon....all 70's baby. Reminds one of "Schoolhouse Rock" and all those other educational cartoons of the time. Very retro (we like retro).

Of course, if one were to update this pamphlet, it would probably have a kid riding a dual suspension mountain bike or a single speed, wearing baggy clothes with a baseball cap worn sideways and an SUV. And with today's "green" mindset, it wouldn't be readily printed on paper, but rather an electronic PDF version available on the internet thru your iPhone. And don't forget the helmet law! My how the times have changed.....
