Starting Line: 1881-1914

Welcome friends to years 1881-1914 of Starting Line.

1885: The safety cycle is introduced by James Starley.

1886: In Germany, the Mannesman brothers invented seamless steel tubing.

1895: Schwinn and Arnold formed the Arnold, Schwinn & Company.

1897: Alfred Reynolds patents the "butted" steel tubes.

1898: Major Taylor becomes the first African American World Champion.

1903: The first Tour de France is held.

1941: Peugeot creates the first recumbent bicycle.

1910: The first "easy to use" derailleur is invented by Paul de Vivie.

1914: Bicycles are implemented for combat.
