Starting Line: 1841-1880

Welcome friends to years 1841-1880 of Starting Line.

1845: The first attempt at a pneumatic tire.

1861: An invention called the velocipede created by Pierre Michaux was introduced. The velocipede had cranks and pedals attached to the front wheel.

1866: A French mechanic named Pierre Lallemont patented the first U.S. pedal driven bicycle.

1869: In May of 1869, the first velocipede race took place in Paris.

1870: A new bicycle called the High-Wheeler, Ordinary, or Penny-farthing was introduced.

1874: The inaugural World Track Championships are held in England.

1876: The first caliper brake was patented.

1880's: Boyd Dunlop invents the pneumatic tire.
